Winterton is a small town located in the foothills of the Drakensberg on the banks of the Tugela River. Close to the Second Boer War battle sites of the Battle of Vaal Krantz and Spioenkop, it is frequently traversed by tourists en route to Champagne Castle and Cathedral Peak, two of the Drakensberg's most spectacular summits!
The Winterton Museum on Church Street features an exhibit on the agricultural history of the region, including a distinctive gallery of San paintings. The Drakensberg Boys' Choir, based in the central Drakensberg, also performs concerts during the week and on weekends. The Drakensberg Boys' Choir School, which is located just outside of town, and a number of monuments and memorials associated with the South African (Anglo-Boer) war, such as the ruins of the Marianne Church, are also well worth a visit. The Winterton Museum may also inspire a visit. It is a modest museum, but the exhibits on Zulu history, San rock art, and the Spioenkop battle make it well worth a visit.
The Village of Winterton hosts an annual street carnival in July, when local artists, artisans, musicians, and businesses servicing the tourism industry gather on the closed-off main street to promote the town! In and around Winterton, there are a number of museums and monuments, including the Marianne Church ruins. They are located on the farm 'Doveton' just outside of Winterton and are named after the widow of the Dutch Reformed Minister, Dr. Faure.
In 2003, the San Art Interpretive Center was established in Didima, Cathedral Peak Valley, displaying the history of the San people through their art and culture. The center is designed to resemble a grotto, a typical location for San Rock Art. The center, which was constructed on a historical site, features numerous other exhibits, including audiovisual presentations and numerous static displays. The center provides the impression of sitting around a campfire with bushmen and listening to their tales. Didima Gorge was known as the Valley of the Bushmen due to the presence of over a thousand paintings in the caves surrounding the valley, with Botha's Cave being the most prominent.
