BERG BACKPACKERS, WINTERTON
Winterton is located at the start of central Drakensberg in KwaZulu Natal. Three years after the Anglo-Boer War, the colonial government constructed a weir across the Little Thukela River where it became a small irrigation settlement named Springfield until 1910, after which it was renamed Winterton.
Every year in July the town comes alive with activity for the street carnival. This is the towns opportunity to showcase a variety of local artists and crafters, along with musicians; bringing visitors from all over to enjoy the town at its best.
The surrounding mountains of the Drakensberg, Champagne, Cathedral and Cathkin peaks offer hiking trails; the dams, trout and bass fishing; wonderful San rock art displays; horse riding and hang-gliding activities.
Winterton is a small community however is a great stopover for those wanting to enjoy the peace of quiet of life with a magnificent backdrop of mountains.
